Dullstroom has been the stopover spot for many travellers on their way from Gauteng to the Kruger National Park. Famous as a spectacular fly fishing spot, the little village transforms itself, with the help of the cold weather, into a wonderland for the annual Christmas themed Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky Dullstroom Winter Festival, which runs from July 5th to the 7th.
Three great outdoor sporting events are the festivals highlights – a 7km and 14km trail run through beautiful scenery on Dullstroom’s outskirts, with beautiful views of the valley and up Grootsuikerboschkop. The team Fly Fishing Competition takes place at the popular and picturesque Dullstroom Dam and is open to both novice and beginners. There is no need rush out and get fully kitted if you haven’t yet invested in the equipment, the cost of entry will get you hired kit and free expert tuition. For the motorbike enthusiasts there will be an MTB Race held at the gorgeous Dunkeld Equestrian Estate & Spa. Apart from the outdoor events, the festival’s organizers have crammed the weekend full of fun things to do and see like live music by top SA bands, and plenty of delicious winter warmer tastings like whisky, chocolate, cheese and wine.
Leaving the little guys at home is not an option, its Christmas after all! Events cater for all ages, and for exclusive entertainment there is the Kids Zone where there is enough to keep them busy for hours. In order to make sure you park your car when you arrive and don’t have to drive it again until the weekend is over, a hop on hop off Buddy Bus system will be running from one end of town to the other, making sure you don’t miss an event and even dropping you off at your accommodation after the concerts. The Dullstroom Winter Festival is a fun way to experience a cold Christmas without having to fly across the world.
