South Africa named as the Best Golf Destination in Africa

December 1, 2014

In the first annual World Golf Awards, held on the 15th of November in Portugal, South Africa beat out Egypt, Kenya and Morocco to be named as the Best Golf Destination in Africa. South Africa was also nominated in the category of Best Golf Destination in the world, but lost out to Portugal.

The glitzy event that was held at the Conrad Algarve Hotel was the first of its kind. The event aims to celebrate great golf courses and destinations around the world by recognizing and rewarding the hard work and dedication put in behind the scenes by the people who promote their destinations and maintain the courses. In what is dubbed as the ‘Oscars of Golf’ the big winners were Portugal which was named as the Best Golfing Destination in the World, St Andrews Links (The Old Course) which was named as the Best Course in the World and The Els Club Teluk Datai which was named as the World’s Best New Golf Course.

Our country certainly has an impressive amount of world class golf courses on offer for international golfing tourists. The Garden Route is littered with pristine golf courses like Fancourt, Oubaai, Pinnacle Point, Simola and Pezula. A round of golf on a South African course is relatively cheap for international tourists. To play on The Links at Fancourt, one of South Africa’s top 2 golf courses, you will be paying R1800 for 18 holes and R550 to play on the Fancourt Montagu course. In international currency that comes to $163, £104 and €131 to play on The Links, a world class golf course and previous host of the Presidents Cup. South Africa’s most exclusive golf course, Leopard Creek, was named as the Best Golf Course in Africa at the World Golf Awards. The course is reserved exclusively for members and guests of members only, however they do allow guests of selected lodges around the area to play the course on weekdays only. Green fees are R2500 ($226, £144 and €181), that’s if you are lucky enough to get access to the course. If you look at these amazing courses, it’s not difficult to see why South Africa was named as the top golfing destination in Africa –
