Honeymoon Destinations: Safari, Beach, City or Local?

November 3, 2015

Honeymoon destinations come in all shapes and sizes. For some honeymooners, lounging on the beach under a coconut tree with a cocktail in hand, is paradise. For others, paradise is exploring the canals of the Okavango Delta or the romantic city of Venice. Whatever you choose, we know that you will find an ideal honeymoon destination in our top honeymoon destination suggestions below.

Safari Honeymoon

Namibia & Botswana: The remote locations of bush lodges and hotels in Africa makes safari honeymoons incredibly intimate. Lodges only accommodate a small number of guests, which allows the staff to focus on personal, individualised service. Safari honeymoons also have the right mix of adventure and relaxation. Game drives and game walks offer adventure, while lazing next to the lodge’s swimming pool or going for a spa treatment is the perfect way to relax with your new spouse. The best safari honeymoon destinations are Namibia and Botswana. Namibia is great for self-drive honeymooners, while Botswana is a fly in destination. Secluded destinations like Sossusvlei, the Skeleton Coast, Etosha and Swakopmund in Namibia, and the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe Game Reserve in Botswana allow honeymooners to escape from the crowds and immerse themselves in true wilderness.

Mauritius & Greece: Beach/island honeymoon destinations have always been the default honeymoon destination for newlyweds and it’s not difficult to see why. White sandy beaches, tropical waters, ice cold cocktails and balmy weather, what’s not to love? Mauritius has been the beach destination of choice for South African honeymooners for some years now. The reason being that it offers visitors every type of accommodation imaginable; from self-catering units to five star hotels and exclusive luxurious villas. There are also endless activities on the island to keep you busy like snorkelling, golf, skiing, windsurfing, deep-sea fishing and even skydiving. For a truly romantic beach holiday look no further than the Greek Islands. The old world charm, exotic and secluded beaches, Mediterranean weather and European lifestyle that the Greek Islands offer is perfect for honeymooners who want to explore new destinations, but also want to relax on the beach for a day or two.

Local Honeymoon

Winelands & Kruger National Park: We all know that weddings cost a fortune. If you’re considering postponing the honeymoon, banish the thought! There are many honeymoon destinations in this beautiful country of ours that won’t break the bank. The Cape Winelands and Kruger National Park are two of South Africa’s most popular honeymoon destinations. The good food and wine found in the winelands, along with the beautiful landscapes and quaint little towns makes it arguably the most romantic destination in South Africa. Kruger National Park has a large variety of accommodation types and packages on offer for honeymooners, the same can be said for the winelands, but Kruger of course has the Big 5.

City Honeymoon

Paris & Venice: Very few destinations can blend history and culture with romance like Venice and Paris. Is there anything more romantic than exploring Venice’s canals in a Gondola, while being serenaded by your Italian gondolier? Well, how about having a romantic dinner while gazing at the bright lights of the Eiffel Tower? Paris, or the City of Love, with its food and wine, art and culture, architecture and lazy afternoons spent in bistros and corner cafés is arguably the most romantic city in the world. It might be a little more expensive to go on a honeymoon to Paris or Venice, or dare I say both, but you’ll certainly be spending your honeymoon in a dream destination that happens to be one of the most romantic places in the world.

Dream Destinations

Bora Bora & Maldives: Speaking of dream destinations, we couldn’t help but dream about a honeymoon in either these ultimate dream honeymoon destinations, Bora Bora and the Maldives. Bora Bora is an island in the Pacific Ocean, halfway between South America and Australia. The Maldives is a series of 26 coral atolls situated some 1030 km off the coast of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean. Both Bora Bora and the Maldives are known for their crystal clear waters and luxurious over-water bungalows. All the travel clichés’ like “paradise on earth”, “tropical oasis” and “bucket list destinations” can be used to describe these destinations. With their dreamlike settings, Bora Bora and the Maldives are, unsurprisingly, a honeymooner’s destination of choice. Flights to the Maldives go via Dubai, while flights to Bora Bora, which literally sits on the other side of the world, go via either North America or Australia. Travel packages to the Maldives and Bora Bora aren’t cheap, but they don’t call them dream destinations for nothing!
